At Qualitative Creative, we believe every frame tells a story, and for our owner, Milo Joker, that story took a transformative turn 10,000 miles away from home.
In 2020, while completing his studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Milo traded the rolling hills of East Tennessee for the rugged coastlines of Australia. This study abroad experience wasn’t just an academic requirement, it was a deep dive into the world of international film production.
Training with the Pros: Filmotion and Off the Map Productions
Milo’s journey in the “Land Down Under” led him to an internship at Off the Map Productions and hands-on experience on a multi-year production headed by producer/director Fred El-Harris. Under the mentorship of supervisor Cam Feast, an experienced cinematographer known for his sharp eye and technical precision, Milo gained hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of professional production. Learning the ropes from Cam and Fred provided the technical experience and foundation for what is now Qualitative Creative.
Rewriting History: Before 1770: The Journey Home
One of the most defining moments of Milo’s time abroad was working on the groundbreaking documentary,
Before 1770: The Journey Home. Produced by Filmotion Productions and in-part written and directed by Fred El-Harris, the film explores the ancient, pre-colonial trade bond between the Indigenous Yolngu people of Arnhem Land and Indonesian Makassan sailors.
Milo didn’t just watch from the sidelines; he was in the thick of the action:
- Boom Operator: Milo was responsible for capturing the raw, authentic sound of the Australian outback and the moving stories of the people on screen.
- Production Assistant: He earned an official Production Assistant credit for his work on the project, which you can verify on the film’s Official IMDb Page of cast and crew.
Bringing Global Experience to East Tennessee
Milo’s time in the Outback was more than just a semester abroad. It was a masterclass in versatility. From the technical rigor required at Off the Map Productions to the cultural sensitivity needed on the set of Before 1770, he returned to Knoxville with a toolkit that most local creators don’t acquire for years.
Today, that “Global Perspective” is the secret sauce behind Qualitative Creative. Whether he’s capturing crisp audio for a local brand or directing a commercial, Milo applies the same high-stakes standards he learned under Cam Feast and Fred El-Harris. He didn’t just bring back souvenirs; he brought back a world-class approach to storytelling that ensures our East Tennessee clients stand out on a global scale.
